An attached garage creates a residential fire-separation condition because vehicles, fuels and other combustible materials introduce hazards that differ from occupied rooms. The Ontario Building Code prescribes fire-separation requirements according to the building configuration rather than simply requiring “fireproof drywall.” Gypsum protection must therefore follow the applicable assembly at walls and ceilings separating the garage from the dwelling.
Where bedrooms or other conditioned living spaces occur directly above an attached garage, the garage ceiling becomes part of the separating construction. The required gypsum membrane must remain continuous across the protected ceiling area and coordinate with supporting construction, perimeter junctions and penetrations. Installing Type X board while leaving unprotected discontinuities can compromise the performance expected from the overall separation.
Furnaces, boilers, water-heating equipment and other fuel-fired appliances can create specific separation requirements depending on their location and the residential building configuration. Where a rated enclosure is required, its walls and ceiling must be constructed as an assembly rather than treating the gypsum layer independently. Combustion-air provisions, appliance clearances and service access remain separate mechanical requirements and cannot be obstructed by drywall.
Electrical cables, plumbing, ducts and other services can interrupt an otherwise continuous fire separation. Open annular spaces around penetrations can create paths for heat, smoke and flame, so approved firestop systems may be required where the applicable assembly calls for them. Firestop sealants are selected according to the penetrating item and listed system; ordinary painter's caulk or general-purpose foam is not automatically an acceptable substitute.

1. Following Tested Assembly Layer Counts
Fire resistance comes from the complete tested construction, including the number and thickness of gypsum layers. A listed design may specify one or multiple layers of 15.9 mm (5/8 in.) Type X or Type C board on designated sides of the framing. Adding a fire-rated panel without reproducing the required layer configuration does not automatically produce the assembly's published rating.
2. Maintaining Required Fastener Patterns
Tested systems specify drywall screw type, length and maximum spacing because attachment affects how long the gypsum membrane remains in place during fire exposure. Requirements can differ between base and face layers in multi-layer construction. Fasteners must engage the specified framing without tearing through the board facing, and substituting a wider screw spacing can depart from the configuration that was subjected to fire testing.
3. Staggering Joints In Multi-Layer Systems
Where multiple gypsum layers form the rated membrane, panel joints are commonly offset according to the listed assembly rather than stacked directly over one another. Staggering reduces continuous pathways through the gypsum layers and allows the outer membrane to cover joints in the underlying board. Joint orientation and edge support must follow the tested design because seemingly minor installation changes can alter assembly performance.
4. Preserving Continuity At Junctions
A fire separation must remain continuous where walls meet ceilings, floors and intersecting construction. Perimeter gaps and concealed junctions are detailed according to the applicable rated system instead of being treated as ordinary cosmetic joints. Where a listed design requires fire-resistant joint treatment or firestop material, the specified product, depth and backing arrangement must be maintained rather than filling the opening with general-purpose compound.

A fire-resistance rating expresses how long a complete assembly met specified criteria during a standardized fire test. Residential separations may be described as 30-minute, 45-minute, 1-hour or other rated constructions depending on the applicable requirement and tested design. The number applies to the wall, floor or ceiling assembly as a system—not to an individual sheet of Type X gypsum board.
In Canada, CAN/ULC-S101 is a principal standard for evaluating the fire endurance of building construction and materials. During testing, assemblies are exposed to a prescribed time-temperature curve while performance criteria such as structural integrity and temperature transmission are evaluated. A listed 1-hour assembly therefore represents a specific construction tested under standardized conditions rather than a prediction that every similarly built wall will withstand every real fire for exactly 60 minutes.
Fire-resistance ratings and flame-spread ratings measure different properties. Fire resistance evaluates the performance of an entire construction assembly over time, while Flame Spread Rating (FSR) describes how rapidly flame travels across the exposed surface of a material under standardized testing. A gypsum product's surface-burning characteristics therefore cannot be substituted for the required fire-resistance rating of a residential separation.
ULC and other recognized testing organizations publish individual design listings that identify the exact components used to achieve a stated rating. A design number can specify stud material and spacing, gypsum product type, panel orientation, layer count, fastener schedule, insulation and joint treatment. Verifying the applicable listing prevents a nominally “1-hour wall” from being assembled by combining components taken from unrelated rated systems.
The gypsum core contains chemically combined water within calcium sulphate dihydrate. When exposed to high temperatures, this water is released as steam through a process called calcination, absorbing heat and helping delay temperature rise through the assembly. Type X and Type C products incorporate additional core formulations intended to maintain integrity longer than conventional gypsum board under standardized fire exposure.
Shaftliner is a dense gypsum panel commonly manufactured at approximately 25.4 mm (1 in.) thick for specific fire-rated systems such as area-separation walls and shaftwall assemblies. It is not simply a thicker substitute for 15.9 mm (5/8 in.) Type X board. Shaftliner must be used as part of a compatible listed system with the specified framing, liner panels and face layers if its tested fire performance is to apply.
The F-rating identifies the period during which a tested penetration firestop system prevents flame passage through an opening during standardized fire exposure. Firestop systems can carry additional classifications, such as T-ratings related to temperature transmission. These ratings belong to the complete tested penetration system—including the opening, penetrating item, annular space, backing and firestop material—not merely to the tube of sealant.
Only when the applicable tested or code-compliant assembly permits it. Fibreglass or mineral-wool insulation can influence thermal and acoustic behaviour, but inserting insulation into a listed wall does not automatically increase its fire-resistance rating. Some designs specifically require cavity insulation, while others were tested without it, so the assembly listing should determine the permitted configuration rather than assuming more material means greater fire resistance.
Electrical boxes create membrane penetrations that must comply with the requirements applicable to the rated assembly. Box material, size, spacing, protective membranes or listed putty pads can become relevant depending on the construction. Firestop putty pads are specifically tested products designed for certain electrical-box conditions; ordinary drywall compound around the box does not provide an equivalent tested penetration-protection system.
